Historic & peaceful in Alexandria, VA

After an inspiring visit to a friend’s lake house one summer, I got back to my desk and decided that I would need to expand the aperture of where I work just a bit in order to spend more time with clients in beautiful old homes. Quite a few homes in DC still maintain their architectural integrity, but the majority of homes have been recently renovated to all look the same, or are privately owned and not available for a closer look. When I expanded my aperture to include Virginia and Maryland, I stumbled into more and more homes like these – antique homes with plenty of original historic character. This home caught my attention not just because of its design personality, but because of its unique siting down an alley of trees and along the Potomac River. It’s exceptional and worthy of preservation, and I’m so happy that I often get to work with clients who share the same sentiment.

This home does need work, both in admin and aesthetics, but that doesn’t mean the architectural integrity needs to be stripped away. For homes like these, I work with my buyer clients to sketch out floorplans & collect inspirational imagery – as well as gather input from build experts – so that my buyers can have a clearer sense of the task at hand before submitting an offer. Stewardship of a home like this is not for the feint of heart, but is such a worthwhile effort if you want a one-of-a-kind home with history!

Another refreshing discovery on this house was how close it was to DC – it only took me about a 25 minutes or so from Capitol Hill on a Tuesday during morning rush hour. Something I will encourage my buyer clients of in the future, if they want a home that really hasn’t been touched, is to look a bit outside of their comfort zone – especially since antique homes within DC are getting more and more challenging to find, with a price point that reflects that.
