Notes from Charleston
Considered the more elegant & “grown up” older sister to New Orleans, Charleston always feels like a bright, juicy experience of a city. With streets that feel both a touch cleaner and more saturated in color, as well as a size that can be taken and enjoyed in a small handful of days, I am glad that Charleston is really just around the corner from me. The food scene here is absolutely bustling, so though I’ve been a few times, I feel there is always a good reason to go back.
My favorite memories
Two nights at 86 Cannon
A number of lunches at Babas on Cannon
Wandering all of the neighborhoods, especially South of Broad
Shopping along King Street
Rainbow Row & walking along the water
Walking S Battery Street to see all of the beautiful homes
Recommendation
86 Cannon Street
Most recently I stayed at 86 Cannon, an intimate & comfortable boutique hotel only a step or two removed from the main drag, owned by the kind and hospitable Marion & Lori. During your stay perhaps you’ll chit chat with the sweet owners over a quiche at breakfast, or luck out with a visit from one of their golden doodles while napping by the pool. I wish I had spent more time catching up on my magazines in the library, drenched in pink wallcoverings and sunshine – but instead found myself answering emails from the patio here & there, catching a bit of the breeze.
The rooms: delightful. I snuck a peek of quite a few of them, but my favorite is certainly the one that overlooks the pool – it has fabulous ochre drapes, lined in little pom poms, that frame a balcony overlooking the grounds.

Is it possible to have a bad meal in Charleston? I certainly don’t have a memory of one, but I’m typically happy whenever I am in close proximity to butter and seafood.
for coffee & breakfast – Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit & Second State Coffee.
for lunch & an afternoon treat – Sugar Bakeshop & Babas on Cannon.
for dinner & drinks – I’ve enjoyed Husk, The Ordinary, & Chubby Fish.
