Supergoop! Review

Despite my fair skin being covered from head to toe in freckles, sunscreen has not been a regular part of my beauty arsenal until the past year or two. Even then, I’ve only really thought about it during the summertime!

Towards the beginning of quarantine, I was looking to ~ splurge ~ and decided to try out the Glowscreen and Play from Supergoop, and now I’m totally hooked. I had tried their defense resetting mist before (which I’ll also talk about in this post as well!), and was excited to expand my sunscreen kit into something that I was actually excited and willing to use each day. Even though I’ve been spending more time inside this year, these products are something that I’ve enjoyed using each day for quick walks around the neighborhood and stoop sessions with my friends.

I was at the beach this weekend, left my Play sunscreen behind because I selfishly didn’t want to share something so expensive, and used whatever was on hand…big mistake. I am burnt to a crisp (though my face stayed pristine with my glowscreen + large brim hat) - so will definitely be bringing my full SPF kit along on the next trip!

Here are some quite sunscreen facts, as quoted from the Supergoop FAQ page:

  • The numbers on your tube of sunscreen indicate how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to burn your skin when using that product exactly as directed. For instance, SPF 30 would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all.

  • There are two main types of UV rays: UVB (burning) rays and UVA (aging) rays. UVA rays are the ones responsible for aging, fine lines, dark spots and all those little things we don’t like about our skin (along with skin cancer). Plus, they shine at about the same intensity all year round and penetrate through things like clouds and windows.

  • You’ll need one-half of a teaspoon (about a nickel-sized dollop) for your face and neck, and one ounce (a shot-glass-full) for your entire body.

  • Vitamin D and sunscreen are not mutually exclusive. It’s a myth that wearing sunscreen all the time can interfere with you getting the amount of vitamin D your body needs. The amount of vitamin D you need is only made during your first ten minutes out in the sun, which isn’t long at all.

The TL:DR is - I’ve gotten noticeably more compliments on my skin recently, and it’s always when I am wearing both Glowscreen on my face and the Play Sunscreen on my body. The price tag is high, but in my opinion, it’s worth it to know I am getting the protection I need without any caveats.

Glowscreen is perfect for getting that subtly dewey, slightly sparkly glow that feels unachievable for the oil-prone like me. It acts as a glowy base layer and makeup primer, but is honestly great worn on its own with mascara. I use about a dime’s worth for my face - technically you should use more, but I want to make it last haha. When you apply it, it’s sticky for only a few moments, then I can’t even tell that it’s there! Plus, it’s SPF 40 so I know that I am fully protected for my walks around town.

Another note about Glowscreen - “It also has a collection of hydrating and skin-nourishing ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, B5 and niacinamide, so it packs a serious skincare punch –– all while protecting your skin for the future with SPF 40.”

This product is truly a win-win and I will definitely be buying another bottle when I run out at the end of the season. If you are nervous about the slight shimmer, check out the Unscreen Sunscreen or the Matte Screen.

Yes, I recognize that the Play Home and Away Kit is almost as much as a new pair of leggings from Outdoor Voices, but y’all, I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t believe in it. When I bought the pump bottle, it didn’t come with a tube, so I’m glad they’ve added that to the kit! Again, people ~ always compliment my skin ~ when I wear this - not that it’s about the compliments, but we all need a little boost where we can get it!

I use one pump of Play to cover my arms and neck before going on a walk - I can’t describe the smell exactly, but it is pleasant. It goes on smooth and isn’t sticky - just a slight shimmer that is elevated with my sweat. The pump feature makes it easy to reach for before heading out for the afternoon.

I’ve also used this for my face, if there is ever any leftover after applying on my arms and neck. It is super lightweight, and I haven’t any more trouble with breakouts that I usually do with the whole mask-situation.

If you are looking to try it out, I recommend ordering the smaller tube first.

If magic could be bottled, it would look a lot like the Defense Refresh Resetting Mist. I keep the spray in my backpack to reapply on my face while on a picnic - it is super lightweight, smells fresh, and such a great tool to have in my SPF toolkit. It can be spritzed right on top of your makeup without a second thought! It’s like an aperol spritz on a summer evening in Italy - refreshing, easy, and you just want everyone to have one. I started off with the little bottle, but just added the larger bottle to my cart. It’s also a fun summer gift for your girlfriends! (and boyfriends - I don’t have one of those!)

Have you tried any Supergoop products? I’m also eyeing the Poof Powder and CC Cream. Be sure to shoot me a DM if you have any recommendations!
